About this role

As a special projects carpenter at SCAD, you will perform various fabrication functions including finish carpentry, cabinet building, painting, faux finishing, mold making, furniture finishing, and decorative work. You will build exhibits, exhibit elements, props, furniture, and other custom installations for exhibitions and events.

In this role, you will work with a variety of materials such as wood, metal, plastics, concrete, foam board, paint or stain, and other finishing products. You will safely operate various hand tools and power equipment, inspect and repair signs and bulletin boards, and complete major and minor building repairs.

You will follow directions or cut lists, ensure your work conforms to all local building codes, and read design drawings and blueprints to produce exhibits. You will also complete work order requests, document problems in the work order system, and coordinate work with other areas of physical resources.

This position requires meeting schedules and timelines, following all SCAD and OSHA policies and procedures, and being on call to handle emergencies. The ideal candidate can follow building plans with excellent attention to detail, maintain a professional appearance, and thrive in a fast-paced work environment while driving to multiple SCAD buildings.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED, with at least two years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination
Knowledge of shop equipment and proper operation, including woodworking, furniture making, cabinet making, metal and plastics fabrication, historic restoration, or other related experience
Ability to stand, bend, and lift throughout the day and perform heavy manual labor in a variety of weather conditions
Valid driver's license
Ability to pass DOT medical exam
Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow building plans
Ability to maintain a professional appearance and work well with others
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment and drive to multiple SCAD buildings

Responsibilities

Perform various fabrication functions such as finish carpentry, cabinet building, painting, faux finishing, mold making, furniture finishing, wood/metal studs with sheetrock, and other decorative work
Build exhibits, exhibit elements, props, furniture, and other custom installations for exhibitions and events
Work with a variety of materials including wood, metal, plastics, concrete, foam board, paint or stain, and other finishing products
Safely and effectively operate various hand tools and power equipment
Inspect and repair or install signs, bulletin boards, and other building specialties
Complete major and minor building repairs
Read design drawings and blueprints to produce exhibits and exhibit elements
Follow all SCAD and OSHA policies and procedures and be on call to handle emergencies
