About this role

Thornton Engineering is a fully Australian-owned market leader in the fabrication of medium and heavy structural steel, plate work, and process equipment. With over 30 years of experience and a long pipeline of contracted work, they are seeking a full-time permanent Project Manager for their Structural & Plate division in Geelong, reporting to the Chief Financial Officer and General Manager.

As the single point of contact with clients, you will chair meetings, manage RFIs, NCRs, and VOs, and forecast potential EOTs while expediting the program to avoid delays. You will monitor and track time, quality, and budget for all projects, provide timely invoice data to maintain cash flow, and produce project closeout reports detailing key learnings.

You will work alongside a team of skilled administrative and production staff to deliver world-class products for well-known tier-1 clientele. Proactive engagement with Production Managers and Planners will be essential to ensure the needs of the organisation and clients are consistently met.

Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree in Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Firm understanding and proven track record of executing commercial and technical requirements in structural and/or pressure equipment projects
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work autonomously
  • Experience with procuring critical long-lead materials through international channels
  • Firm understanding of manufacturing techniques and production planning
  • Previous experience in structural steel manufacturing is highly regarded
  • Proven ability to manage project budgets, schedules, and quality metrics in a fabrication environment

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the single point of contact with the client concerning all project aspects and deliverables in collaboration with senior management and stakeholders
  • Direct procurement and project team members to ensure materials, buy-ins, logistics, planning, and resource allocation meet assigned targets
  • Chair meetings, finalise minutes, and manage all RFIs, NCRs, VOs, and general correspondence
  • Forecast potential EOTs and VOs, expediting the program to avoid an EOT where possible
  • Monitor and provide ongoing tracking of time, quality, and budget for all individual projects
  • Provide timely invoice data to the finance team to maintain positive cash flow
  • Prepare project closeout reports detailing learnings through each project
