About this role

As a Design Project Manager (Mechanical Engineer), you will manage multi-disciplinary projects for landside and airside improvements under the Capital Construction Program and Capital, Operating, and Maintenance Investment Program at Reagan National and Dulles International Airports.

You will serve as the Principal Staff Technical Advisor, conducting and managing design projects for mechanical systems such as central utilities plants, hydrant fueling distribution, fuel farms, building HVAC, and dedicated fire service. You will oversee contractors and consultants, ensuring scope, quality, schedule, and budget are met.

You will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders including engineers, architects, code officials, and management. You will also work with the Safety Program and Buildings Codes Managers to integrate safety requirements and ensure compliance with MWAA codes and standards.

You will conduct site investigations, review construction progress reports, shop drawings, and material lists to confirm design intent and project requirements. This ensures high-quality control standards and minimizes changes during construction.

This role offers the opportunity to develop and maintain Airports Authority design standards, present recommendations to leadership, and serve as a Contracting Officer's Technical Representative. You will have a direct impact on capital improvement projects at two major international airports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Experience managing multi-disciplinary capital improvement projects involving mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems used in airports (central utilities, hydrant fueling, HVAC, fire service).
  • Familiarity with building codes, safety standards, and regulatory requirements (MWAA codes a plus).
  • Ability to serve as Contracting Officer's Technical Representative (COTR) and review contractor submittals.
  • Strong technical advisory and design management skills with experience in site investigations and construction oversight.

Responsibilities

  • Manages multi-disciplinary mechanical engineering projects on airside and landside under CCP and COMIP.
  • Serves as Principal Staff Technical Advisor for CCP and COMIP projects, focusing on Mechanical Engineering.
  • Conducts and manages design projects involving mechanical systems (Central Utilities Plant, Hydrant Fueling Distribution, Fuel Farm, Building HVAC, Dedicated Fire Service).
  • Manages assigned capital improvement projects including oversight of contractors and consultants for scope, quality, schedule, and budget.
  • Reviews work of contract design firms and monitors mechanical systems engineering aspects of CCP, COMIP, and tenant projects.
  • Consults and collaborates with internal and external stakeholders (engineers, architects, code officials, management) on mechanical engineering projects.
  • Develops and maintains Airports Authority design standards and guidelines for mechanical systems.
  • Serves as contracting officer's technical representative (COTR) on airside and landside mechanical engineering-related projects.
