About this role

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH), operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking a motivated Carpenter I to join our Facilities team. This role performs all necessary activities to properly design, inspect, repair, install, maintain, alter, and remove carpentry-related structures, building components, and furnishings.

Day-to-day work includes structural repairs, alterations, and improvements such as lowering ceilings, paneling, preparing surfaces for plaster or cement, and replacing Formica tops. You will also plan, design, install, modify, repair, and remove carpentry-related structures while pricing, ordering, storing, and documenting stock and special-order materials.

You will work under the Foreman and Carpenter II, alongside other hospital employees and contractors to ensure the operation, safety, and regulatory compliance of all structures on the hospital property. This role also involves providing supervision to trade workers and collaborating with consultants, vendors, and hospital administration.

This position offers the opportunity to develop and maintain knowledge of hospital policies and relevant codes while attending meetings, training, and other assigned events. The role also includes inspecting buildings needing carpentry repair, estimating job duration and costs, and reporting results.

Requirements

Proficient in interpreting all codes, regulations, and standards related to the planning, design, installation, modification, repair, and removal of carpentry-related structures, building components, and furnishings
Capable of performing all physical activities related to the duties outlined in this document
Skilled in reading blueprints, drawings, and layouts
Ability to estimate job duration and cost/quantities of labor and materials
Experience with pricing, ordering, and inventorying carpentry materials and parts
Knowledge of hospital policies, procedures, practices, and directives

Responsibilities

Price, order, store, inventory, distribute, and document stock and special-order parts/materials

Operate, maintain, secure, and supervise departmental/hospital equipment
Ensure compliance with all relevant codes, regulations, and standards
Interpret and create sketches, patterns, blueprints, instructions, and layouts of work to be done
Inspect buildings needing carpentry repair or alterations, estimate job duration and cost/quantities of labor and materials, and report results
