This entry-level Power Plant Operator position at Xcel Energy's Hayden Station offers a starting pay of $40.56 hourly. The role involves operating, inspecting, monitoring, and performing minor maintenance on power plant equipment such as boilers, turbines, and auxiliary systems.

Operators perform equipment operational checks including startup, shutdown, tests, and adjustments. They respond to plant emergencies, unit upsets, and changing operating conditions while working 12-hour rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime. This role also requires working in inclement weather and wearing required personal protective equipment.

The position includes hands-on training, classroom training, and computer interactive programs to learn plant operations. Operators work alongside Control Specialists, Maintenance Specialists, and management, assisting and supporting them as assigned. They also isolate power sources for clearance and monitor equipment conditions.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have successfully passed the Edison Electric Institute Power Plant Maintenance and Plant Operator selection exams.
  • Must have valid driver's license and be willing to drive off-site using personal vehicle (mileage reimbursed).
  • Must successfully pass Xcel Energy screening requirements including drug test and security clearance.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds safely.
  • Work in inclement weather and be qualified to wear all required PPE including respirator.
  • Must be able to work overtime and various shifts as required, and perform duties from scaffolds and catwalks in high and confined spaces.
  • Post-secondary technical training or previous power plant operator experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, inspect, monitor, and perform minor maintenance on power plant equipment including boilers, turbines, and auxiliary systems.
  • Actively participate in hands-on training, required classroom training, and computer interactive training programs.
  • Perform equipment operational checks including startup, shutdown, tests, and operating adjustments.
  • Respond to plant emergencies, unit upsets, and changing operating conditions.
  • Assist and support Control Specialists, Maintenance Specialists, and management as assigned.
  • Isolate all potential power sources to achieve clearance in preparation for inspection, testing, or maintenance.
  • Monitor and record operating conditions of equipment; recognize abnormal operation and initiate trouble reports.
  • Operate and perform maintenance on equipment, and direct or train others in performing these activities.
