About this role

Under general supervision from a higher level supervisor, perform master carpentry and painter work. Supervise variously skilled carpenters and painters in their respective work. This journey-level role supports campus facilities through skilled trades expertise.

Perform miscellaneous rough and finish carpentry including design, fabrication, repair, and installation of cabinets, Formica tops, shelving, walls, ceilings, floors, doors, windows, hardware, glass, partitions, dispensers, and locks. Hang signs, pictures, and bulletin boards. Conduct skilled bench work and miscellaneous shop duties while maintaining equipment and tools.

Plan and inspect jobs, perform layouts, and interpret blueprints. Execute skilled painting and patching by preparing surfaces through sanding, masking, and scraping, then apply paints, varnishes, and stains using rollers, brushes, and sprayers. Finish drywall and plaster, perform glazing, caulking, and ceramic tile work.

Maintain housekeeping conditions, assist other trades areas, and supervise semi-skilled and skilled tradespeople. Assist supervisor in allocating work assignments, evaluating performance, and training new personnel. Handle office records, requisitions, work orders, and related departmental duties in a dynamic university environment.

Requirements

  • Approved certificate from an accredited carpenter apprenticeship program and two years carpentry/painter work experience; or high school diploma/GED certificate and five (5) years directly related work experience
  • Current, valid Ohio driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • Ability to perform master carpentry and painting under general supervision
  • Experience supervising variously skilled carpenters and painters
  • Skill in interpreting blueprints and estimating costs
  • Proficiency in preparing surfaces and applying paints, varnishes, stains
  • Capability to work exposed to sawdust, dirt, fumes, noise, heights and dangerous power equipment
