About this role

At Stony Brook Medicine, Cabinet Shop Carpenters are responsible for the construction and repair of structures and other items in Stony Brook Medicine and adjacent grounds. Qualified candidates demonstrate excellent intrapersonal skills and time management skills. They have attention to detail and work with all levels of the organization.

Carpenters use machinery, tools including power and hand types, equipment and materials of the cabinet shop trade. They possess working knowledge of the cabinet trade including installations and adjust locks, hinges and other door hardware. They read blueprints and specifications related to the cabinetry field.

Carpenters maintain an organized and clean workspace, understand verbal and written instructions, and perform moderate to heavy labor. This includes lifting in excess of 50 pounds, standing for extended periods, climbing ladders and working at heights on scaffolds and platforms. They operate motor vehicles, large box trucks and forklifts while adhering to all safety practices.

They pass respirator fit tests and wear assigned personal protective equipment. Willingness to work early or late shifts minimizes interference with departmental operations. Other duties as assigned may include supervising and training others.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a NYS two-year Carpenter Traineeship or NYS two-year Carpenter training program; OR equivalent carpenter two-year training or apprenticeship program; OR four years of full-time experience in carpentry under a skilled journey-level carpenter
  • Working knowledge of carpentry techniques
  • Working knowledge of the math of the carpentry trade
  • Ability to plan, lay out and complete varied carpentry work
  • Ability to read blueprints and interpret building and furniture plans
  • Ability to use the tools, machines, equipment and materials of the carpentry trade
  • Ability to perform the physical tasks required of a Carpenter
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions

Responsibilities
