About this role
The General Carpenter Pre-Apprenticeship Program for Women is a specially funded training initiative designed to support women in exploring and entering the skilled trades through accessible, supportive, and hands-on learning opportunities. Part-time professors deliver the General Carpenter Level 1 curriculum in classroom and shop environments. They provide high-quality instruction while fostering an inclusive environment.
Faculty maintain safe learning spaces, evaluate student progress, and build participant confidence, retention, and success. Day-to-day involves delivering courses such as Residential Estimating, Calculation and Layout I, Plans, Specifications & Codes, Safety, Materials & Tools, and Welding. They develop lesson plans, learning activities, and assessments aligned with apprenticeship standards.
Instructors monitor attendance, progress, and practical skills, identifying concerns early and communicating with the Project Lead. They work closely with Project Lead, lab technologists, First Peoples’ Centre, trades area, and staff. Collaboration ensures an optimal learning environment for all participants.
The role emphasizes safe shop practices, hazard awareness, and health and safety standards. It supports women overcoming barriers in skilled trades and benefits from understanding Indigenous learner needs. Professors contribute to a respectful space encouraging success in construction careers.
Requirements
- Licensed Carpenter with valid Certificate of Qualification
- Minimum five (5) years of experience in all aspects of general carpentry
- Demonstrated teaching ability and knowledge of adult learning success strategies
- Ability to deliver curriculum aligned with apprenticeship Level 1 standards
- Demonstrated commitment to safe shop practices, hazard awareness, and applicable health and safety standards
- Ability to create an inclusive and respectful learning environment that encourages women in the skilled trades
- Effective communication, interpersonal, organizational, and computer skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based training environment
Responsibilities
- Deliver training covering General Carpenter Level 1 curriculum including Residential Estimating, Calculation and Layout I, Plans, Specifications & Codes, Safety, Materials & Tools, and Welding
- Develop lesson plans, learning activities, and assessments aligned with required learning outcomes in classroom and shop settings
- Maintain a safe, organized, and productive learning environment at all times
- Monitor student attendance, progress, and practical skill development; identify concerns early and communicate with Project Lead
- Work closely with Project Lead, lab technologists, First Peoples’ Centre, trades area, and staff to support student success
- Work collaboratively with students and colleagues to provide an optimal learning environment
- Perform course preparation, delivery, assessment, student feedback, record keeping, and evaluation of theory and practical competencies
