About this role

Reporting to facilities management, the General Service Technician - Carpenter fabricates, installs, and repairs items in the carpentry field, including doors, windows, ceilings, and floors. The role requires significant knowledge and recent full-time experience in preparing, decorating, and protecting interior and exterior building surfaces. This position supports Facilities Maintenance at Boston Medical Center.

Following standard operating procedures and safety norms, construct, erect, install, and repair structures of wood, plywood, and wallboard using hand and power tools while conforming to local building codes. Perform remodeling and repair work on building interiors and exteriors, apply paints, varnishes, and protective coatings with brushes, rollers, or spray guns. Prepare surfaces by sanding, scraping, filling holes with putty or plaster, and mixing paints to match colors.

Coordinate work functions with fellow workers and assigned manager for tool usage and daily preparations. Maintain equipment, tools, work areas, manuals, repair records, and in-house inventory for emergency repairs. Participate in hospital-wide training and meetings as required, and respond to on-call and overtime needs.

Cut, shape, and assemble wood sections with shop tools like planers, jointers, and power saws, reading plans and sketches for fabrication. Assemble components for structures such as cabinets, desks, and doors, preparing them for finishes. Complete work in a timely, workmanlike manner while safeguarding hospital tools professionally.

Requirements

  • Significant knowledge and recent full-time experience in the preparation, decoration and protection of interior and exterior surfaces of buildings
  • Ability to use carpenter’s hand tools and power tools including table saws, drill presses, planers, jointers, and routers
  • Conformance to local building codes in all carpentry work
  • Skill in reading and interpreting plans, sketches, and shop drawings
  • Experience determining type and dimensions of wood stock to be used
  • Proficiency in surface preparation techniques such as sanding, scraping, filling cracks and joints
  • Knowledge of mixing paints, pigments, oils, and thinners to match specified colors

Responsibilities

  • Apply all types of primers, lacquers, paints, varnish, and other protective coatings using brushes, spray guns, or rollers
  • Install doors and windows, make and install shades, repair furniture, and install classroom fixtures
  • Perform all types of remodeling and repair work on interiors and exteriors of buildings
  • Prepare surfaces for painting using sandpaper, brushes, steel wool, scrapers, and cleaning detergents
  • Read and interpret plans, sketches, and shop drawings for milling and fabrication
  • Maintain and clean equipment, tools, and work area
  • Respond to on-call and overtime requirements as needed
