About this role

The Safety Officer is responsible for coordinating the center safety program at the Inland Empire Job Corps Center, ensuring full compliance with government and management directives. This role involves inspecting all areas for hazards and maintaining a safe environment for staff and students. They work to identify potential hazards and initiate corrective actions to prevent accidents.

Day-to-day duties include conducting safety inspections, ensuring fire extinguishers are available and in working condition, and assisting in developing safety policies. The Safety Officer also investigates accidents, maintains logs of injury reports, and makes recommendations for prevention. They conduct monthly fire drills and promote safety campaigns to reduce accidents.

The Safety Officer collaborates with center staff to promote safety campaigns and facilitate monthly safety committee meetings. They work within a team dedicated to youth development, supporting Job Corps’ Zero Tolerance Policy and career success standards. This position ensures a safe living environment for students while modeling high standards for a work environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in safety, industrial hygiene, or related field with 24 semester hours in safety, industrial hygiene, chemistry, or biological sciences.
  • Experience managing safety and health programs and conducting safety inspections and job hazard analysis.
  • Working knowledge of occupational health and environmental regulations.
  • OSHA certification preferred.
  • Experience working with youth.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and computer proficiency.
  • Ability to maintain accountability of staff, students, and property.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect all center areas for safety and health violations to identify potential hazards; initiate corrective action.
  • Ensure fire extinguishers are available in required locations and in working condition at all times.
  • Assist in developing and implementing the occupational safety and health plan.
  • Provide fire and safety procedures and training to staff and students; conduct training on OSHA standards.
  • Maintain logs and reports of all employee and student injury/accident reports; investigate serious accidents and make recommendations for prevention.
  • Ensure monthly fire drills are conducted in all areas.
  • Ensure that personal protective equipment (PPE) is worn in the trades to comply with OSHA standards.
  • Facilitate monthly safety committee meetings; review accidents and identify corrective actions.
