Stonemason/Bricklayer

Downer is on the lookout for a Stonemason to join our Auckland crew. Stonemasons lay bricks, pre-cut stones and other types of building blocks in mortar or concrete to construct and repair walls, partitions, bluestone kerbs, arches and other structures. They cut and shape hard and soft stone blocks and masonry slabs for construction and renovation of stone structures including heritage works.

Key tasks include studying plans and specifications to determine materials required, dimensions and installation procedures. Seal foundations with damp-resistant materials and spread layers of mortar or concrete to serve as base and binder for blocks using trowels. Lay bricks and bluestone kerbs in rows, designs and shapes, spreading mortar between joints.

Embed blocks or stones in mortar or concrete, removing excess mortar and checking vertical and horizontal alignment. Cut, shape and polish stones and bricks using machines and hand tools, shaping bricks to fit irregular spaces. Design and cut monumental masonry kerbs and stones in lettering, constructing walls using stone slabs and large masonry slab blocks.
