About this role

ASRC Federal Communications seeks a Water Plant Operator for the ISS2 contract supporting the Air Force customer. This rotational role is located at Eareckson Air Station on Shemya Island, Alaska. The operator controls treatment plant equipment to clarify and disinfect water for human consumption while meeting EPA standards.

Daily work includes operating electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate water flow into the plant. Laboratory tests determine pH, iron, manganese, free chlorine, and turbidity levels. Chemical feed rates are adjusted and data from meters and gauges are recorded to maintain proper operation.

The position also covers sewage treatment plant equipment to satisfy NPDES regulations and Eareckson Air Station discharge parameters. Work occurs at a remote site where dormitory housing, cafeteria meals, and government-sponsored transportation from Anchorage are provided.

Assigned duties are performed with minimal supervision while following federal, state, and Air Force regulations. Proper PPE is worn for each task and related work is completed as needed to support continuous plant operations.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and Air Force Regulations regarding water and wastewater treatment operations
  • Knowledge of common safety practices and protective equipment used on a construction site
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools commonly used in the construction trade
  • Ability to understand and follow directions
  • Ability to perform assigned duties with minimal supervision
  • Ability to inventory and requisition supplies for water/wastewater operations

Responsibilities

  • Operates and controls electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate flow of water source into treatment plant
  • Tests water samples to determine pH, iron, manganese, free chlorine, and turbidity using pH meter, colorimeter, and turbidimeter
  • Injects specified amounts of chemicals such as chlorine and potassium permanganate into water and adjusts feed rates
  • Backwashes filters when head loss reaches 6-10 psi differential or at minimum every 96 hours
  • Repairs and lubricates machines and equipment using hand and power tools
  • Observes variations in operating conditions at the wastewater treatment lagoon and maintains operations log
  • Collects sewage samples and conducts laboratory tests using pH meter and dissolved oxygen meter
  • Sets up and collects influent and effluent samples from automatic composite samplers for BOD and TSS analysis
