About this role

The General Maintenance position is responsible for performing a variety of carpentry tasks, including repairing, constructing, painting, and installing materials to support maintenance and building operations. This role uses carpenter's hand tools and power tools to ensure compliance with local building codes. Work covers structures and fixtures across campus facilities.

Daily tasks include constructing, erecting, installing, and repairing items like roofs, window frames, cabinets, doors, floors, walls, and playground equipment. Reviews and interprets blueprints, sketches, or building plans to determine required materials and dimensions. Prepares materials by measuring, cutting, shaping, and sanding with tools such as table saws, routers, and drills.

Installs and repairs materials on-site using drills, hammers, ladders, and other tools, while cleaning dust and debris from worksites. Prepares surfaces for painting by patching, sanding, scraping, and sealing; mixes paints to match colors; applies coatings with brushes, rollers, and extension handles. Arranges scaffolding and ladders as needed.

Assists with training new employees and carpenter helpers, orders materials, and completes work orders noting hours and usage. Communicates openly with co-workers and supervisor. Pursues professional development and follows safety procedures for hazardous materials and personal protective equipment.

Requirements

  • High school graduate, or equivalent, and/or 1-2 years' experience in related field
  • Ability to work accurately with figures, measurements and tools
  • Ability to read and interpret sketches/drawings and verbal or written requests from end users
  • Missouri Class E valid driver's license with a good driving record (may be obtained within 30 days of hiring)
  • Ability to work nights and weekends if needed and be part of on-call rotation
  • Daily lifting tools 10-30 lbs
  • Frequent lifting concrete and brick materials up to 80 lbs
  • Frequent lifting of office furniture and residence hall furniture

Responsibilities

  • Constructs, erects, installs and repairs structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, wallboard, brick, masonry, tile and concrete using carpenter's hand tools and power tools
  • Reviews and interprets blueprints, sketches, or building plans to determine type of material required and dimensions
  • Prepares materials needed by measuring, cutting, shaping and sanding using tools such as table saw, radial saw, router, drill press, miter saw
  • Installs and repairs materials at the site using drills, hammers, nails, screwdrivers, ladders and cleans worksite of dust and debris
  • Prepares surfaces for painting by patching plaster/drywall, sanding, scraping, sealing/caulking/glazing windows
  • Mixes and/or blends paints to match colors and applies coatings using brushes, rollers with extension handles
  • Completes work orders by indicating number of work hours and amount of materials associated with each job
  • Assists with training and instructing new employees and carpenter helpers
