About this role

The Project Cost Manager elevates cost management practices across the enterprise. This role partners with Operations Leadership to improve forecasting accuracy, train project teams, and assist in reconciling cost issues. It proactively identifies impacts to project profitability while acting as the company’s project cost subject matter expert.

Day-to-day responsibilities include reviewing monthly project forecasts, examining cost code efficiencies, and providing support to PMs and PEs. Focus areas encompass job cost tracking for labor, quantities, and productivity, along with monthly cost-to-complete forecasting. Change orders, cost recovery, and standardization of cost practices are key priorities.

Reporting to the Director of Cost Management, this position collaborates closely with Operations Leadership and project teams including PDs, PMs, and PEs. It involves auditing projects to address profit fade or gains and ensuring consistency across the organization. Day-to-day support fosters accountability in cost processes.

Growth opportunities lie in training teams on cost forecasting methodologies, revenue projections, quantity tracking, and margin protection strategies. Driving behavioral change through capability building and corrective actions enhances enterprise-wide forecasting accuracy. Continuous improvement in cost management positions the role for impactful contributions.

Requirements

  • 7–15+ years experience
  • Strong background in cost engineering / project controls, Excel + job cost systems, or project management with strong financial acumen
  • Experience in self-perform or production-heavy work
  • Proven ability to train teams, challenge PMs, and drive behavioral change
  • Strong work ethic and a “can-do” attitude
  • Software proficiency in JDE, Power BI Reporting, Procore, Microsoft Project or Primavera P6
  • Ability to learn, navigate, teach and leverage complex software systems

Responsibilities

  • Educate and assist project teams with internal cost processes and procedures
  • Review and validate monthly project forecasts
  • Improve accuracy of revenue and cost-to-complete projections
  • Train PMs and PEs on cost forecasting methodologies, CMRs, quantity tracking, schedule of values, billings, and change order tracking
  • Perform deep-dive financial reviews across projects
  • Identify profit fade/gains, cost inefficiencies, underreported revenue, and contract balance alignment
  • Provide actionable recovery strategies to project teams
  • Standardize cost practices and support day-to-day needs of PMs and PEs
