About this role

Coho Technology Solutions is seeking a Boiler Plant Operator to independently support the operational objectives of NAVFAC Washington. This role provides boiler plant operator labor support to various locations within the Washington area, with a hiring location at NSA Bethesda, MD.

The operator manages all equipment in a boiler plant to produce and control steam or high-pressure temperature water to meet demands. Daily tasks include igniting fires, monitoring gauges and flow meters, adjusting firing controls, and collecting water samples for chemical treatment.

This position requires constant vigilance for system defects, performing minor repairs, and following emergency procedures until issues are corrected. The operator also maintains logs and conducts routine operational maintenance such as cleaning burners and greasing moving parts.

The role involves operating various air conditioning and cooling systems, as well as auxiliary equipment like pumps and de-aerators. The operator must independently plan and carry out work according to established methods, handling complex demands due to variable steam loads.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the location and function of all equipment controls, meters, and gauges in the plant.
  • Experienced skill to determine appropriate action to meet significantly complex demands.
  • Knowledge of prescribed tests and chemicals to test and treat boiler water.
  • Ability to read drawings and circuit diagrams of the boiler plant to quickly locate and repair defects.
  • Thorough knowledge of fuels used, chemical reactions in combustion, and proper fuel-air ratio for efficiency.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of maintenance requirements and procedures to control pollutants.
  • Ability to independently plan and carry out work in accordance with established operating methods.

Responsibilities

  • Operates all equipment in a boiler plant to produce and control the amount of steam necessary to meet demands.
  • Ignites fires, puts boilers in service, and closes down boilers as needed.
  • Monitors flow meters and charts to determine steam production and fuel usage.
  • Adjusts firing controls, fuel feeds, and air drafts for optimal combustion efficiency.
  • Collects samples of boiler water, performs prescribed tests, and determines chemical treatment amounts.
  • Performs routine operational maintenance including cleaning burners, oiling moving parts, and packing valves.
  • Operates various types of air conditioning and cooling systems, regulating temperatures and pressures.
  • Maintains logs, records, and plant data while keeping all machinery and spaces clean.
